Welcome to Past Punditry, the website of political historian and commentator Nicole Hemmer. Past Punditry is dedicated to bringing a historical perspective to today’s most important political debates. It aims to move past the worst sort of punditry: punditry that is reflexive rather than reflective, that chases the ephemeral rather than the essential.

Hemmer is a visiting assistant professor at the University of Miami and a visiting scholar at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. She writes about politics and history for US News & World Report’s Thomas Jefferson Street blog. She has written about conservative media and politics for publications including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Christian Science Monitor, and the Australian. Her book, Messengers of the Right, is under contract to Penn Press’s Politics and Culture in Modern America series.
